South Louisville Oral Surgery

Every August, I notice something predictable and meaningful happening in our community: families across the Louisville area start thinking about oral health in ways they simply don’t during other months of the year. Students heading off to college want wisdom teeth addressed before they’re hours away from home. Parents enrolling kids in school are scheduling long-overdue dental checkups. And the summer sun — as wonderful as it is — has a way of reminding all of us that we’ve been putting off appointments we meant to make back in June. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon here in Louisville, I find August to be one of the most rewarding times of year to serve this community, because people are genuinely motivated to take action on their oral health.
Wisdom tooth removal is, without question, the most common conversation I have this time of year. For young adults preparing to leave for college, timing really does matter. Recovering from an extraction or surgical removal is far easier when you’re at home with family support, good food nearby, and a trusted care team within reach. Waiting until a wisdom tooth becomes infected or painful — often at the worst possible moment, like finals week — turns a manageable procedure into an urgent one. If your son or daughter is between 17 and 25 and hasn’t had their wisdom teeth evaluated, August is genuinely the right moment to act.
Beyond wisdom teeth, summer presents a few seasonal oral health challenges worth addressing. Increased consumption of sports drinks, lemonade, and iced teas — all common in the Louisville heat — can significantly erode enamel over time. I encourage everyone to rinse with water after sugary or acidic drinks, use a straw when possible to reduce contact with tooth surfaces, and stay well hydrated throughout the day. Hydration isn’t just good for your body; saliva is your mouth’s natural defense system, and dehydration compromises it. Also, if your family has been active outdoors this summer — playing sports, hiking, or swimming — now is a great time to make sure any mouthguards are properly fitted before fall athletics begin.
At South Louisville Oral Surgery, our goal is simple: to be the oral surgical partner that Louisville families can count on at every stage of life — from that first wisdom tooth evaluation to more complex reconstructive care. We’re conveniently located to serve residents across the Louisville area, and our team works hard to make every visit as comfortable and straightforward as possible.
If you or someone in your family has been on the fence about scheduling a consultation, I want to personally invite you to reach out to us this month. August is a wonderful time to get ahead of concerns before the school year picks up pace. We are here for you, and we are proud to be part of this Louisville community.
