Every August, I notice something familiar in the rhythm of our practice here in Louisville — the phones get busier, families are juggling back-to-school preparations, and young adults home for the summer are finally making time for appointments they’ve been putting off. It’s one of my favorite times of year, honestly, because it reminds me how connected oral health is to life’s bigger transitions. Whether a student is heading off to college for the first time or returning after a semester away, August has a way of bringing important health decisions to the front of mind.

Wisdom teeth are, without question, the conversation I have most often this time of year. For many young people in the Louisville area, the window between summer break and the fall semester is genuinely the best time to address third molars that are impacted, crowded, or causing discomfort. Recovery time is real — typically three to five days of rest — and planning that around a school schedule is simply easier said than done once classes resume. If your teenager or college-aged child has been told they may need wisdom teeth removed, August is the month to act. At South Louisville Oral Surgery, we make every effort to see families promptly so that recovery is complete well before the first day of school.

Beyond wisdom teeth, summer brings its own set of oral health considerations worth keeping in mind. Increased consumption of sports drinks, lemonade, and iced coffees during hot Louisville summers can quietly erode enamel over time. Drinking water — particularly fluoridated tap water — remains one of the simplest and most effective habits for protecting teeth. I also encourage families to use this season as a natural checkpoint: if anyone in your household has a dental concern that’s been lingering, a filling that’s been postponed, or jaw discomfort they’ve been managing quietly, this is the time to get it evaluated before the busyness of fall sets in.

Parents, please don’t overlook yourselves in this process. Back-to-school season tends to center entirely on the kids, and I see it every year — adults in the Louisville area who delay their own care while managing everyone else’s appointments. Your oral health matters too, and conditions like TMJ discomfort, bite issues, or even early signs of sleep apnea are things our practice is equipped to assess and treat.

I am genuinely proud to serve the Louisville community from our home at South Louisville Oral Surgery, and I take seriously the trust families place in us during what can feel like a stressful season. If you have questions about wisdom teeth, surgical consultations, or any oral surgery concern, I warmly invite you to reach out and schedule a visit. We are here, we are ready, and we would be honored to help your family start the school year with one less thing to worry about.
