South Louisville Oral Surgery

Every August, I notice something familiar happening in the Louisville area — families are suddenly in motion. School supply runs, sports physicals, orientation days, and yes, quite a few calls to our office about wisdom teeth. It happens every year without fail, and honestly, it makes a lot of sense. For many young adults, the summer-to-fall transition represents one of the last long stretches of recovery time before college classes or a busy senior year kicks into full gear. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who has called this community home for years, I look forward to helping Louisville families navigate this season with confidence and good information.
Wisdom teeth are very much on the minds of Louisville parents and students this time of year, and for good reason. Most wisdom teeth begin causing problems between the ages of 17 and 25, right when many young people are either heading off to college or wrapping up high school. Addressing wisdom tooth removal before the fall semester starts allows for a recovery window that simply won’t exist once classes and commitments pile up. If you or your student has been told that wisdom teeth are erupting, partially impacted, or worth monitoring, now is an excellent time to come in for an evaluation so we can plan accordingly.
Beyond wisdom teeth, August in the Louisville area brings a few other oral health considerations worth keeping in mind. The heat and activity of summer often mean more sports drinks, lemonade, and iced coffees — all of which are highly acidic and can erode enamel over time. I always encourage patients to rinse with water after consuming acidic beverages and to wait at least 30 minutes before brushing, since enamel is temporarily softened by acid exposure. Staying well hydrated with plain water is genuinely one of the simplest and most effective things you can do for your oral health this season. A dry mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria, and in Louisville’s summer heat, dehydration can sneak up on you quickly.
For student athletes heading into fall sports, this is also a great moment to talk about mouthguards. Whether it’s football, soccer, or field hockey, a properly fitted mouthguard can prevent injuries that are far more complex — and costly — to treat than they are to prevent. Our team at South Louisville Oral Surgery is always happy to discuss protective options and refer you to the right provider for a custom fit.
We are proud to serve the Louisville area and the surrounding communities, and our goal is always to make oral surgery feel approachable, not intimidating.
